It has fleas, could this be the reason. Also it does play and run around somewhat(it never was really frisky) and has an appetite, so does that mean its probably not feeling sick if its in god enough mood to play?

Some cats are very allergic to fleas even one bit can cause a large allergic reaction(itchy skin, hair loss, sores). You may want to look into a flea product like advantage or frontline which will kill fleas. Make sure you don't buy any of the flea products from the grocery store (hartz,bio spot, zodiac) which can cause seizures and death.(i have seen many of these cases at my work). If the flea product doesn't help talk to your vet about the next steps you need to take.

Has there been some change to his environment ? Cats shed in the spring when it warms up and get hairier in the fall when it cools down. He also could have a flea allergy.

nope nothing wrong it means you need to brush her more because it's not healthy fur my cat did that we brush her now and she doesn't shred
